Precision rifle shooting is a sport that demands both skill and dedication, where shooters test their marksmanship abilities at long distances. In this Q&A, we sit down with Matt Partain, a seasoned Hornady-sponsored shooter hailing from Louisiana. With over seven years of competitive shooting experience and an impressive list of accomplishments, Matt shares his journey, insights, and the invaluable lessons he’s learned from the world of precision rifle shooting. From his first steps plinking at beer cans to representing his country on the global stage, Matt’s passion for the sport shines through. Join us as we delve into the mind of a sharpshooter who believes in the importance of having fun, forging friendships, and embracing the challenges of precision rifle shooting.

Can you tell me a bit about yourself? Where are you from, and what do you do for a living?

I’m from Louisiana, born and raised, and I’ve lived here my entire life. I work in the oil and gas industry. I worked offshore for 16 years but now I work on the manufacturing side.

How long have you been shooting competitively, and what got you started in precision rifle shooting?

I’ve been shooting competitively in the precision rifle series for about seven years. It all began with shooting for fun and then gradually became more competitive as I wanted to take part in actual shooting competitions. I found the Louisiana Precision Rifle Club, I showed up to a one-day match and quickly learned that I did not know what I was doing, but I didn’t give up and kept going and continued to progress.

Have you achieved any notable titles or accomplishments in your shooting career?

Yes, I got the chance to represent the United States at the World Championships in France in 2022. I competed in the Limited division and, interestingly, the entire top four positions were secured by shooters from the USA. I finished fourth in my division, while my fellow American shooters claimed the first, second, and third places. It was a proud moment for all of us and a fantastic experience in my shooting career.

How did you first get into shooting, and who introduced you to it?

My dad introduced me to shooting. He used to set up beer cans as targets, and we would shoot them with a Browning 22 rifle, the one where you had to load the bullets through the stock. It all started as a fun and casual activity.

Did you undergo any formal training or mentorship to improve your shooting skills?

I took one class with Ryan Castle of Core Shooting in Florida, but the main way I improved was by participating in competitions and learning from better shooters and friends in the shooting community.

What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned from your shooting experience?

The most valuable lesson I’ve learned is not to take it too seriously. Shooting should be fun, and it’s essential to enjoy the experience.

What drew you to precision rifle shooting in particular?

I was fascinated by the challenge of shooting accurately at long distances. While I can shoot pistols and other firearms, the challenge of long-range precision shooting is what truly captivated me and still does to this day.

What advice would you give to someone interested in taking up precision rifle shooting?

Don’t be shy. The shooting community is full of great people who are willing to help. Just dive in and give it a go.

Do you participate in other shooting sports or activities, such as hunting?

Yes, I enjoy hunting and shooting skeet. However, in terms of competitive shooting, I primarily focus on precision rifle shooting.

Could you describe your competition setup, including your rifle and equipment?

I shoot a 6mm Creedmoor loaded with Hornady 108 grain ELD Match ammunition. My rifle is made up with a Defiance action, Krieger barrel with ACE muzzle brake and TCS stock. It’s topped with a Kahles K525i with SKMR4 reticle with left side windage, mounted with Hawkins rings. I use MDT magazines and Armageddon Gear bags, along with a Harris bipod, Swarovski binoculars, and various other range bags and tripods.

How do you prepare for competitions, and do you have any pre-match rituals?

Before competitions, I test everything to ensure it aligns with my Kestrel and that all variables are accounted for. It’s essential to make sure everything is in sync before the match begins.

What’s your greatest achievement in your shooting career so far?

My greatest achievement has been the friendships I’ve built with people from around the country and the world through shooting. These connections have been incredibly rewarding.

What are your future goals in precision rifle shooting?

I plan to continue shooting competitively and aim to attend one or two new places every year. Two years ago I had planned on going to Indiana and Pennsylvania, but that’s when I ended up going to France instead. Meeting new people and experiencing different shooting environments is a big part of my future goals.

Do you have any favorite shooting locations or matches that stand out to you?

One of the standout matches for me was the Wisconsin Barrel Maker hosted by Ken and Missy Wheeler, which sadly isn’t going any more. It was a combination of their dedication, the challenging terrain, and the great food that made it memorable.

If you could meet one person, dead or alive, related to shooting, who would it be and why?

I’d love to meet Sam Colt or John Browning, as they’ve had a significant impact on firearms design and innovation. I’d be curious to learn about their inspirations and ideas.

A passionate and dedicated precision rifle shooter, Matt is always ready to take on the next challenge with a steady hand and a sharp eye

How long have you been a Hornady-sponsored shooter, and what do you appreciate most about their products?

I’ve been a Hornady-sponsored shooter for four years. I’ve always liked their products for their quality and performance. The Hornady brass and ammunition I’ve used have been reliable and cost-effective for the high volume of shooting I do.

Any upcoming shooting trips or plans for the hunting season?

Yes, I’m heading to Kansas soon to hunt whitetail, and I’ve been discussing the possibility of going hunting with Tom Fuller, owner of Armageddon Gear on some of his properties. I also did some turkey hunting earlier this year with Justin Watts of Fouled Bore Precision and in Kansas, so it’s been an exciting season, with more to come.

Is there anything else you’d like to add or share about your shooting experiences?

I would encourage anyone interested in precision rifle shooting not to be hesitant. The shooting community is welcoming, and it’s an enjoyable and rewarding sport to get involved in.

In the heat of competition, Matt remains a picture of focus and precision, aiming for excellence shot by shot
